WHO IS TWYLA, ANYWAY?

Twyla is a real life dog who lives in our community. Click here to see a large picture of her. A book has been written about her life and is charmingly illustrated. It is called Twyla's Home. Copies are available from Twyla's Friends and from some local kennels and vet's offices. All proceeds from the sale of this book benefit the homeless animals in Kingwood, Texas. Twyla's story does not start in Texas, however. Here is the first chapter.

I Am Lost

I was born in northern California near San Francisco. There were six of us in what is called a "litter". Our mother taught us to eat food from a bowl and how to bark and play. We spent most of the day eating, sleeping, and chasing each other around. One day we found the backyard gate open and decided to explore. I was having so much fun that I forgot about my brothers and sisters.

Pretty soon it was dark and I didn't know where I was. I found a flower bed and curled up under a bush. When I woke up it was morning. A little girl found me and took me into a house and asked her mother if she could keep me. Her mother said, "No, and we must try to get the puppy back to her home."

They knocked on doors and put up signs. Nobody knew where I lived. They couldn't keep me so they took me to an animal shelter. The mother said, "At least the puppy will be safe here until her owner can come and get her."

The little girl was sad because she wanted to keep me. I was sad because I wanted to get back home to my family.
